Import charges on shopping?

Hello, if this is not an appropriate place to post, please let me know and delete:
I bought an electronic car battery starter from Amazon.co.uk and had no way of knowing that it was coming from the US. I've been charged import fees by FedEx, which I understand from their perspective they are simply doing a job, but the seller does no respond and Amazon customer service has not helped at all. Surely this is not something I can know or control and it's not ignorance, but rather it's down to the information being hidden. Can I do anything to get this money back after paying or get FedEx to charge the seller?
