2nd reference problem

I have problems with a 2nd reference as the employers that I have worked between my current job - started in 2008 to 2004, no longer exist. The job which I left in 2004, I am a totally different person.now to back then.
Character reference is a difficult one too. The ones that have been named before are either deceased or don't have any contact details as moved on. Not on Facebook and people that knew them don't have their new details either.
I'm just praying that the employer which I left in 2004 would do this "was employed by us between X and Y as a (job title)"

Old payslips??
Who say's you'll get a reference from your current employer?
Current employer 'reference' policy - or as I seem to be the only one to have meet employers who don't write them in MSE world....
"While there is no statutory duty to provide existing or ex employees with a reference we do understand the importance of an employee being able to demonstrate that they have worked for the company, in order to support this, employees who left the business will be provided with a standard letter confirming job title and dates to and from.
This policy is in place for ALL employees and workers and the standard letter is in no way a reflection of an individual's performance"
For and on behalf of HR Services.
So way of the world now. Well in mine. If a new employer doesn't like it well they can chose to reverse the offer. But I've never had it yet on references alone.0
