Car finance help!!

So I took out car finance on a Vauxhall Astra. I took it out over 5 years in which the car will be mine. However I have had it a year and have had nothing but problems with it, it has been in and out of the garage more times than on my drive and I cannot afford to pay the finance along with the constant repairs on the car. The latest problem was the head gasket which has failed. My question is, is there anyway I can hand the car back to the finance company? I’m not half way through and I was stung with the price of the car (desperate pregnant lady needed a car) so my repayments are massive. I need help!!

I assume it wasn't new if you are paying repairs?

Did you get a warranty with it?

    How old is it? Cost?

What repairs has it needed? If it is a variety of different things it will be difficult to prove it wasn't fit for purpose. If it was the same thing repeatedly and they haven't managed to fix it you might have more of a case.
  • No I bought it as a second hand car. It’s 6 years old and I will have paid £10000 at the end of my finance, £8,000 for the car. It came with extended warrenty but that runs out at Christmas.
It’s been different things that have been wrong with the car :( but all major things, the gearbox, the brake cylinders and the head gasket are obviously the main ones.

When I first bought the car there was a noise coming from the engine, I took the car back in to be looked at and they told me nothing was wrong. However 3 months later the gearbox went and once fixed the noise stopped. I know they’ve fixed it but it seems to just be fault after fault! I loose sleep over it.

I doubt if you have any rights that you can enforce with a 6 year old car. What mileage has it done?
Has the extended warranty paid for the repairs to the car?

For £8000 you could have got a supermini new with a full manufacturers warranty. 5 years is an extremely long time to be paying a 6 years old car. That means it will be 10 or 11 years old before it is paid.Selling the car and paying off the finance may be possible, but you are likely to be in negative equity, meaning you will have to pay the difference yourself.

I'm sorry, it's probably not what you want to hear, but I cannot see an easy way out for you here at all.
  • Thank you,

No I thought that would be the case but worth an ask if anyone has been in similar situation. The car has nearly 100,000 miles! It’s only worth 2,500. I stupidly went into the dealership desperate as I was nearing the end of my pregnancy with not a big enough car! I did have a brand new car before but wasn’t big enough so the 8,000 includes the 1,500 negative equity I was in with the last car. But obviously still a lot of money for the car I have got. They definitely stung me but because I’ve signed the paperwork it’s my own fault!!
Thank you for your help though. I think I may have to look into settlement figures and see where I stand. Might be cheaper for me to get a loan to pay of this car and then start again when I can afford it!
    Pain!

If it's under warranty why are you paying for the repairs?
