How to make scotch egg

Options
Hi guys

So I'm hoping to make some scotch eggs but I haven't a clue how to actually make them ..

I'm guessing I boil the egg first then wrap in a sausage meat then breadcrumb and bake in oven ...

Sorry if I sound really silly :D

Yes that's it in a nutshell! Aim to boil the eggs on the runny side of hard boiled. You want to bake for 12-15 minutes in a mediumly hot oven

I deep fry mine after the breadcrumbs
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • When I used to make them a few years ago when I had four of us to feed I would sometimes instead of breadcrumbs use dry stuffing mix especially sage and onion for a savoury coating. Great for picnics and delicious hot or cold

Does anyone have a vegetarian option that could replace the sausage meat? I'm happy to mix separate ingredients in the food processor, but I need to be sure that the resultant mix would adhere properly to the boiled egg, so a "tried and tested" recipe would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA.

School dinners introduced me to Welsh Eggs, cheese and onion mashed potatoes instead of the sausage meat. I've also used Sosmix and done quails eggs in various stuffings (usually the fancy boxed Christmas stuffings, though regular sage and onion also works)

Thanks nuatha I'd never have thought of cheese onion & mash to coat eggs, even though it's a tried-and-tested flan filling! :D

I use Linda McCartney red onion and rosemary sausages. You need 2 sausages per egg, unless you use small eggs. There are a range of different flavoured vegetarian sausages. I plan to try the chorizo ones sometime.

I don't usually bother with the breadcrumbs. Just bake them in tbe oven.

I bake mine in the oven &, like JackieO, sometimes use stuffing mix. You can also use dried potato flakes. I prefer dried breadcrumbs but daughter likes fresh - we all have our favourite methods :)

If I use sausages, I use 1 and a half for each egg.
