It may be that cans have a use by date of 2-3 years after purchase, but how long were they stored for??
Perhaps the word safe was a poor one - maybe stating the food wouldnt spoil is more accurate.
As for my sources - just type canned food: safety into a search engine - there is a large debate regarding the chemiclas used in the coatings. Most refer to "safety levels" and some refer to "daily toxicity levels" - the point at which no ill effects are felt. However I will just highlight one word that springs out - toxicity.
Most of this is from reputale sources such as the FSANo Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

ok, thanks, I just think if we're discussing info about such important issues, it's good to quote a source- cheers.
If one thing doesn't get ya, something else will eh? I was reading about teflon and its dangers on here recently and now tinned cans! ee gads, we're all doomed!0 -
There is one more thing to consider - its from a government funded agency - and who trusts a politician??No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

When my husband was working in the Sudan in the 1980s his cook came home with some tinned corned beef from the market that said on the side of the tin 'a present from Germany 1949' on the side .He ate it and said it was o.k.,but there he was fed up with eating goat all the time. I wouldn't have thought you would come to a great deal of harm.open it, smell it, and if it seems o.k. then eat it.
How ever did we survive the last war , not by worrying about a sell by date thats for sure.We were too keen to get our hands on anything edible and I'm still here nearly 70 years later0 -
Well i had it for dinner yesterday and still here today. So it looks ok to eat. Thanks for all advice.0

I asked about dented tins in another thread as my gran really puts her foot down on this issue lol.
I dnt see the problem with dented tins at all and think there will be some scare stories out there. But hey did they not say microwaves would kill us, and we still use them today.
I think it is just a case of check and if your that worried and its a content that can be frozen. Open the tin when you get back from shopping sniff it look at it, if its ok stick it in a tub and bung it in the freezer.
Problem solved :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:(Mind you I used to live in a type of hostel and money was scary I was only 18 so I used to eat things from dented tins and cold if I could not be botherd to heat them lol. Although do not think I will eat pizza flavoured pasta any more yacky) Wins in 09 = A vodka cocktail kit thing lol, £150 Amazon voucher.0
