Reduce notice period once given

Good evening,
I have recently handed in my notice at work. I'm part-time 3 days a week. My notice period as per my contract is 4 weeks as I've been there over two years, but I actually gave 6 weeks notice 2 weeks ago to give the employer time to sort out a replacement.
Conditions have changed at work since I handed in my notice, and I would now like to reduce the notice from the given 6 weeks to the required 4 weeks. Can I legally do this?
Thanks in advance.

You could give 4 weeks notice now, but that won't gain you much.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Re-reading my question I think I could have phrase it a little better. The last line should be more like:
I gave them 6 weeks notice meaning I finish in 4 weeks' time. I would now like to change it so that I leave in 2 weeks' time. Can I?0 -
You can't back date it, no. You can give them four weeks from tomorrow. Or you can ask them! What they might allow is different from what you are entitled to do.Re-reading my question I think I could have phrase it a little better. The last line should be more like:

If you have outstanding holiday to take and would save them paying out extra at the end.
(They don't have to allow it) but each employer could view it differently.
Nothing is worth walking away unauthorised.
Also to look at it in another way, will your old and new payday 'meet nicely'?0 -
Thank you very much, you've answered my question. Most grateful.
