So, it's 40 outside..(I'm abroad)..the gym is air conditioned. ...or...there's ice on the ground, or heavy rain...or just an area that's not pleasant to be out in, (as a woman, it can be horrible out running)
..there is a need for a safe and comfortable place to exercise...with showers!

It's horses for courses. ..my gym has highly qualified trainers for both the young active bodybuilders and gym bunnies and also the fragile and infirm, where safe and supervised exercise is keeping them in their own homes, and then there's folks who meet at the gym rather than the cafe.
Many of the classes are great fun.
Council gyms are not so expensive and in some places can be cheaper with a Drs recommendation thingy I've read...You can use a pay as you go facility.....

    Or not.

Just get some exercise..and don't judge how others get theirs.
I agree with this - although in the OP's case it appears to be her associates who are judging her way of keeping fit.

It depends entirely on the person, I personally use a gym, but I also run, cycle and I'm hoping to find a rugby club here.

Gym wise I go for the equipment needed for the type of training I enjoy doing, it does help my fitness, but I could increase other areas if needed.
  • Fitness is about the exercise you do, not where you do it, so no, you don't need to go to a gym. It's personal preference, but I would be shored bitless sat on a machine staring at the gym wall for hours. Regarding the amount of exercise you need, that would depend of what you want the fitness for. If it's just for health, then there is a law of diminishing returns if you exceed the recommended 150 min/wk.

The OP isn't looking for exercise advice.
She seems to be doing a fair amount regularly.
I workout at home for about 30-40 mins a day to one of the many fitness dvds I have ,usually about 5 or 6 days a week and I walk about 40-60 mins a day.

The OP's question is whether she should join a gym as per the advice of people she knows.

Relevant though is that running is quick, simple and doesnt require a membership. The OP said she is a single mother, implying that a membership is not worthwhile and does not necessarily have the time. Running is something outside the house that improves on these criteria.

So what? Its a forum i.e. discussion.

I could also talk about people who clearly need to get out more if I wished.

Oh sorry, I must have mis - interpreted that. ...

If you can afford it, have the time and enjoy it, go to the gym OP. Get trial sessions with more than one local gym.
Otherwise, enjoy active time with your children.

If you want to join a gym and can afford it then great, do it.

Imho it isn't a necessity. In fact it'd be my idea of hell, because I have a "people-phobia" and would sooner shoot myself than exercise with a lot of strangers.

Fwiw, I managed to shed two and a half stone, with the aid of WiiFitPlus, in the privacy and comfort of my own home.

Do whatever works for you, and ignore those who say you should do this, that or the other.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)
