tax codes and jobs

Not sure where to put this - which forum but I thought someone here might help.
A relative had 2 jobs - his main one and a 2nd job. The tax code 1156X was applied to the first job so the 2nd job he paid tax on everything that was earned, tax code BR X.
(he had flat rate expenses of £60 for the main job as he washed his own uniform)
Job number 1 has now gone. He still has a couple of weeks pay to come plus possibly a few accrued holiday days. He has not had a P45 or a P60 yet.
He now wants to get the main tax code applied to the 2nd job which will probably now be the main job for the rest of this tax year.
When does he get in touch with HMRC - would it be right now even though there is some pay to come from the main job? Or after the final pay comes through, maybe at the end of the month?
Does he have to inform his 2nd job employers of the change?
The 2nd job has a pay period that runs from the middle of each month - ie in the October paypacket will be pay for hours worked September 16th to Ocotber 15th - so he is keen to make the 2nd job the main job ASAP for tax purposes.
Is he better to ring the 0300 number for HMRC to inform them? And is it better to back this up with a letter but if so where is this sent to?
