Hello
Can I see any hygienist without having to go to a dentist first?
or
Is it a case that I have to see a dentist BEFORE i can get an appointment with a hygienist?
Can dental hygienist's set up their own business without a connection to a dentist.
Thanks

Yes you can see a hygienist without seeing a dentist first. However not all hygienists are happy to do this and many would want you to see a dentist first.
Yes a hygienist can set up a practice and there are some hygienist only practices , mostly in London.0 -
A hygienist usually likes you to see a dentist first. The dentist makes a detailed report as to any work that may need to be done on your teeth. In my case they also took xrays. Dentists also determine how long (roughly) you will need to see a Hygienist for. Hygienists it seems don't like surprises!! You will need to pay to see a hygienist even if you qualify for free NHS treatment. It was around the £70 mark for a half hour appointment with lots of Novocaine for a long overdue deep clean when I went to see my hygienist a couple of weeks ago.SPC7 ~ Member#390 ~ £432.45 declared :j

If you're due a check up for dentist then go see the dentist. It's only about £20 for a check up on NHS. The hygenist near me is £55, they recommend to see a hygenist every 6 months and my dentist says to me every 2 years, so I would see a hygenist without a check up, providing I'm not due a check up.
When are you due a check up? If it's 'due a long time ago', then get a check up before the Hygenist, you don't want them to be cleaning and then find a massive cavity which they could accidentally make worse0 -
Hello abc987 Not seen you for a few months

I've missed your threads asking dental questions you know the answer to already! How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -

How can you find a hygienist only practice.
Is there a central database or website that lists them?
Thanks0 -
If you google dental hygienists in my area, you should get an idea of what’s around.
Some Dental practices allow ‘direct access’ to their hygienists - and these should come up in a search like that if there are any near you.How to find a dentist.
