    Answer = 1

    5+5=10
    5*2 + 2=12
    5*2 - RedPencil*5 = 5
    Therefore RedPencil = 1

Mathematically multiplication/division comes before addition/subtraction so there is no confusion over the answer even if there are no brackets.

Edit: Reading the answers to this comp on facebook, I just cannot believe that so many people think the answer is 9! What the heck are they teaching in schools nowadays? I really hope kids are not being taught that the answer should be 9, because it is WRONG. Some are talking about Linear Arithmetic as opposed to BODMAS, as if they were two equally correct mathematical systems. I don't know where the term Linear Arithmetic comes from but what they are calling BODMAS is NOT an option, it is the mathematical precedence order applied to ALL mathematics and there is no other correct solution. BODMAS is merely an acronym to help remember the order.

Mind you, if I was selling Red Pencils to them, I'll quite happily relieve them of £9 each!

    the answer is 9, you have contradicted yourself by saying 5 * 2 + 2 =12

    ?

    5*2 = 10 +2 =12

or rather, 5 of something plus one of something equals 6 of something, and if that equals 12, the something is 2.

    yes I know that but
    5 * 2 -red * 5 = 5
    5 * 2 = 10 - 9 = 1 * 5 = 5

    so red = 9

Sorry, that is incorrect. See comments above about multiplication before addition/subtraction:

    The ONLY correct order is:

    (5*2) - (RedPencil*5) = 5

    10 - 5*RedPencil = 5

    5 = 5*RedPencil

    so RedPencil = 1

It does NOT matter whether brackets are included in a mathematical expression or not, the order of precedence never changes. You multiply and divide first, then add and subtract.

Sorry, just to clarify, if brackets ARE included, they are FIRST in order of precedence, then Orders(or powers), then Division/Multiplication then lastly Addition/Subtraction. Apply as needed ie, if no brackets, next do orders, then multiply etc. That's what the acronym BODMAS stands for, but it is purely a way of remembering how to apply the precedence.

If somebody who has posted 9 wins I will cry...

    What is "linear arithmetic"?

    You really want to know?

The syntax of a formula in linear arithmetic is defined by the following rules:
    formula : formula ∧ formula | (formula) | atom
    atom : sum op sum
    op : = |≤| <
    sum : term | sum + term
term : identifier | constant | constant identifier

As an example, the following is a formula in linear arithmetic:
    3x + 2y ≤ 5z ∧ 2x − 2y = 0 .

Note that equality logic is a fragment of linear arithmetic...

Yeah, school maths rules ok. It's actually to do with computer logic and programming.

If you use BODMAS the answer is 9, if you don't the answer is 1.

That's why I didn't put an answer in the op lol

    I put both!

No it really isn't - BODMAS gives you the order in which you perform the operations. You have to use BODMAS all the time. If there are no brackets in the equation given then you disregard the "B".

There is only one correct answer and that is 1. If anything else was the case the whole world of mathematics doesn't work.
