Demand that im liable money overpaid to dressed grandmother!

Hi

My Grandpa worked for British steel...he died in 1994 with my Nan getting widows pension until she died 3 years ago. British steel recently got intouch with my dad asking if he was next of kin as there was money in the pension pot due to be paid to the next of kin....he said he isnt (Nan was mums side)...,and that I'm now next of kin

Found it pretty bizarre that they owe me...its a pretty tenuous link to a pension. Once I'd sent everything they asked, paying for a new copy of the death certificate etc it turned out they had lied and say I owe them £180! I closed my Nan's bank account a few days after she died and thought I'd informed everywhere, no payments went in in those few days but they say they paid the money (its 2 months worth of what she got) would it not have just bounced back?

Anyway. ..I have absolutely no intention of paying this but....can anyone confirm that they really don't have a legal claim against me

Thanks

As the legal representative, i.e. executor , of your Nan's estate. Then you are personally liable for your own actions.

A death grant to the next of kin (or nominated person) isn't unusual for a DB scheme, though only for a deceased original member, not a deceased widow or widower. Perhaps the administrator had your nan's record miscoded as an ordinary pensioner's rather than a widow's...?

If so, great - write back to the administrator confirming the date your nan's account was closed (if you have a copy of the final statement, even better), and therefore that there is no final pension payment needs returning.

However... are you sure your nan's pension was paid in arrears? It's not uncommon for pensions to be paid in advance, either wholly or in part. E.g., the pension for November being paid on 12th November or even on 1st November. Were a pensioner to die on 13th, then half of November's pension will have been overpaid, and the overpayment will need to be reclaimed by the administrator.

If money was actually overpaid, it should be repaid by the estate.

Are you sure this is legitimate and not a scam?
