How hard is it to get into these three industries without a degree from a Russell Group university?

In my experience, pretty easy.

Graduated from non-RG university with a 2:1 In law.

Worked in property for 18 months. My managers were absolute !!!! and decided I needed to get out quickly.

Ended up securing a role as a tax accountant with full study support within two weeks and happily handed my notice in.

I work in a small boutique firm, two offices, one in London and another in a wealthy part of the UK (where I am based). Did also have a potential job offer for a Top 10 firm but they said at the last minute they no longer had the work available for a role in personal tax, but would I be interested in employer taxes? I said no.

Currently ATT down and in progress with CTA.

If you have recently graduated I would apply for a graduate scheme. I missed the boat on that due to timings, hence my route into tax, but graduate schemes recruit 1000s of grads every year.

Obviously your ideals are the big 4, then top 10 etc.

Decide whether you want to do audit or tax first though. Audit has better exit opportunities to industry whereas tax is more specialised.

You didn't need to ask the same question twice, and I'm not even convinced that this is the question! You resigned recently (presumably before you supposed you might get dismissed?). Random 1.5 line questions won't get you any information worth having. Why don't you give us a better explanation of your circumstances and what you are worrying about, and let people help you properly?

Depends on many factors eg ...how good is your degree...what subject is it in...does your university have a good reputation in that subject...what career do you want...what is "well paid"?


FWIW my nephew graduated from a Russell Group uni last year with a 2:1 in what I'm told is a "good" subject. He's spent the last year in London basically doing an internship but didn't get a substantive post. He's now returned home and is still looking for a job.


Tony Blair thought it would be a good idea if 50% of school leavers went to university. Unfortunately, he didn't ensure that there would be enough graduate scheme places and "well paid" jobs to accommodate these increased numbers!


So, unless you have a 1st (or at the very least a 2:1 - though isn't that everyone these days!) in a sought after subject, you may find it quite difficult - unless you are looking at a really niche labour market.

Impossible. Nobody has ever managed to get a well paid job without a degree from a Russell Group university. The best you could expect with a degree from any other institution is maybe £17,800 a year if you are lucky. £17,400 if you only got a 2:1.

Although, for many soon to be graduates, I fear you may be right...


EDIT: Did I read on these boards a couple of days ago that you could get a degree in hairdressing? How do the students manage to cope with the wealth of academic literature in such an area? I'm sure it can be quite technical ( see numerous posts about hair extensions; bleaching burns etc) but is it an academic subject? Apologies if my obvious prejudices offend any sensitive readers).
