Thank you Shangaijim, I did ask for her to repay the money on Friday, so am hoping it'll happen this week.

In other news.....we've (just!) found out that we'll be joined by a mini SWSE in October. I'm a mixture of nerves & disbelief to be honest. Whilst this was very much planned, I can't help feeling trepidatious about travelling for a month with work (in March), overwhelmed at everything I have to do, but moreover the fact that I've thrown a mini bomb at our financial situation.

DH & I need to sit down & assess our current finances & come up with a plan for the next few months & years. Scared doesnt quite cover it....
Original Mortgage as of September 2016 = £322,999  Paid off by 2051

    Current Mortgage Balance October 2020 = £262,480
    Current Mortgage Balance December 2020 = £250,852
    Current Mortgage Balance January 2021 = £248,219
    Current Mortgage Balance February 2021 = £246,000
    Current Mortgage Balance March 2021 = £243,434
    Emergency Savings = £40,000
    S&S ISA's = £5,536

It would be even scarier if you weren't on top of things!

    Congratulations :)
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
    :) Mortgage Balance = £0 :)

After a week of experiencing all the emotions, it's payday :T

I made my automatic max OP of £1,000 to the mortgage.

I added £300 to our holiday fund, and £200 to my Christmas fund.

I also upped my credit card payment to £500 this month - its 0% for another 9 months, but I'm keen to clear it asap.

Whilst we have £12k in savings, I still think it's best for me to OP the mortgage whilst I can. DH will continue to add to savings. We are going to look at numbers this weekend & work out how we'll manage things when I go on maternity leave. I might be being optimistic, but I'd still like to add £1000 (between us) to mortgage OP/Savings whilst I'm not at work, and try not to touch our savings.

My aims before October & arrival of our baby are:

    *clear cc debt (£1500 remaining)
*have a fully funded Christmas pot
    *have £18,000 in savings
*OP mortgage by an additional £5k

....oh & have a nice holiday!

Morning, the train fare being an unexpected expense is a fabulous reason to bring up the money next tIme your set eyes on her - "my husband's relative is really unwell and we've just had to spend over a hundred pound on an emergency train fare. Such a nightmare, it leaves us short this month so I'm really hoping you were just about to tell me you have at least some of my money today? If you don't have it today i will really need it on payday thanks"

Don't feel embarrassed about playing up the idea you are short of funds. Don't for one minute feel guilty that you are taking control of your money now and can 'afford' to not get this money repaid.

The other angle is to just let it go and if you ever do get it back then that's a bonus. It is really hard not to judge what people are spending when you give them a loan but you deciding to help them out financially unfortunately does not give you the right to dictate what they spend it on. We have been in this position begore and also just recently when we gave bil an emergency loan towards buying a house as they were going to be £15,000 short due to the bank changing how much they were going to lend based on new lending criteria. Since they had already budgeted paying this money back I was happy to lend it to them. Then we found out they went on holiday for a week. That could make me mad thinking they are going on holiday with 'my' money but where would that get me? I'd be awake grinding my teeth and raising my blood pressure, they would be on the beach playing with their kids and completely unaware. So I consciously decide to not worry about what they are spending, how they budget, when that holiday was booked and what I would do in their place etc etc. It really doesn't matter that I would literally have sold everything I own and be sitting on tea chests and orange boxes before I asked someone for money to tide me over and you shouldn't think that way either. It wasn't you who asked for money, it was your pal. It actually doesn't matter that you would be embarrassed or try to pay it back quick, she may or may not be embarrassed, you can't know what goes on in someone's head and it's difficult to judge by their actions as they may over compensate.

Just worry about yourself and think twice before lending this particular friend money again - the old adage 'fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me' is a good one to remember.

You are doing well, some good advice on here plus your own ideas all seem to be working

Me again ! I hadn't realised I was a page behind !! Well done on asking for it back and many congratulations on your news. You are already ahead of the game by your money planning :money: just don't get sucked into the idea now that you have to buy every parenting magazine and baby item that apparently is 'essential' and derail all your plans. While they are a baby they just need you and dh and a blanket to be cosy in tempting to it may be to cover your house in baby stuff :rotfl::rotfl:
