How to get treatment?

I often wonder why people think Doctors are demi-gods ....if you think of them as mechanics that deal with the body rather than machines it puts it all into perspective - well it does for me anyway.
It is a case with any organisation, whether it be governmental or not, that those who shout loudest will get seen to first ...just think of that annoying customer that always seems to have their request dealt with quickly - we do it to get them out of our hair.
As for the medical issue I had a similar cough and was given tablets to take after food as well as Gaviscon (and yes I should have been told to buy it OTC!) and the cough went away .....though it was around the time I started losing weight consciously so I don't know if this will help in the meantime0 -

It appears, that even with health matters, that this is the case.
The Gaviscon appears to be helping and we will buy it OTC in future. (although it was a GP whom he saw whilst on holiday that prescribed this, not our own GP).
My husband does not need to lose weight. At nearly 69 he is still the same 11 stone he has always been. (Wish I could say the same for me!).
Thanks all once again.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

That's a good analogy. And what would one do if the garage you kept taking your car to didn't spot an obvious problem or fault? Take it to another garage! But of course you can't do that with your own health. Even animals get better treatment than we do, in that regard. If the vet's a bit rubbish, you take your dog/cat/guinea pig to another one. If your GP's a bit rubbish OTOH, you just get told (in no particular order)
Doctors aren't Gods you know
You just need to keep going back to them
Are you sure you've explained the problem properly
and so on and so forth..0 -
Have you thought of changing doctor? We had a terrible doctor when we first moved here and were about to look for someone else when he retired. The new doctor was brilliant, well he still is. Doctors aren't all the same and from what you say you have problems with him as well. It is worth thinking about as one day he might be making a life or death call. I think you need to have a bit of confidence in a GP. I trust mine totally and the nurse practitioner is wonderful.0

Have you tried to change Dr? In our area they will only take you if you don't have one.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

They're not supposed to do that:No, you don't have to tell your current GP that you want to change. You don't have to tell the new GP surgery why you want to change, either.
I've recently changed GP. Someone (not in the NHS) told me that you have to give a good reason why you want to change, but I wasn't asked when I went in to the new one. I just had to fill in a few basic forms.
It took three or four days for my notes to come through to my new GP - I filled in the forms on a Monday and could view them online with the new details by the end of the week.
ETA: More info here, including:You have the legal right to choose a GP practice that best suits your needs. Try comparing GP practices according to facilities, services, access and performance before you decide. Ask friends, relatives and others you trust for their thoughts and recommendations.
The GP practice must accept you, unless there are reasonable grounds to refuse you.
Although it does say that they can refuse if they have no capacity. I'd be surprised if every GP in an urban area is full though.

Have you googled acid reflux? I have this and gaviscon is not going to make it significantly better. I have to take lanzaprazole daily, in my case it is caused by a hiatus hernia. Go armed with facts and get the referral to a specialist.0

Well as I said in my post we were just starting to look into it when our GP retired. We are in a small town but there was another GP that would have taken us, we were told where to go by a neighbour who did change to the other doctor. Have you tried? Did you change doctor when you moved?0 -

Tried some years ago and were told the lists were only open to those eho didn't have a Dr. Didn't change when we moved as we actually moved closer to the surgery!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Well maybe it has changed, might be worth asking again. A few years ago you couldn't get an NHS dentist near us for love nor money now they have banners outside inviting people to sign up. I don't know where all the extra dentists have come from but situations do change. If your GP is as bad as he sounds it would be worth asking.0
