looking for permanent job while temping

Hi,

Need some advise please.

I've been accepted for an agency temp job that will last for 2, possible 3 months. Obviously, I would like to have a permanent job.

My question is, am I legally binding to finish this temp job? Should I not bother about finding a permanent job whilst doing this temp job?

The temp job won't start until 9th oct, if by miracle I'm accepted somewhere else before, can I say no to the job?

Thanks.

San

If its a day to day temp job then you can leave whenever but is nice to give them a day or two notice so they can replace you. If its a contract then you need to check your contract, usually a week notice.

I didn't sign anything apart from the registration form with the agency. If it's a contract then I should sign something to say this temp job last for x amount of months?

Depends on what the agency says. Last year I had a temp job, to last 8ish weeks to cover someone's op. Within 2 weeks of starting I'd been offerred a longer term temp position elsewhere. I accepted it. The first place wasn't happy but I pointed out I'd signed nothing to say I would stay there for the whole duration. With the 2nd job (where I still am) I was told for the first 3 months I would have to give a months notice, after this it would became 1 weeks notice.

What do you think would happen to you if the tables were reversed - there was no need for the 'temporary worker'?

Personally though I wouldn't mess an agency around - it does tend to limit the future with them. That's just my experience even with the day on day assignments.

I'm in employment with an end date/no promises about future made - people in this country get stick when making themselves 'intentionally homeless' why is the job scene any different, I can't imagine rolling up at the job centre in a couple of months going yeah I knew this day would come and decided to do nothing. If I left early realistically I'm doing myself out of the "confirmation of employment" when the finish date is and a whole lot of grief.

I had a temp job turn permanent couple of years ago, only once I'd got another job offer in hand which set the increase in salary, but regrettably I didn't have the skills once additional duties were added to the temp post. If I hadn't got another job offer I'd probably have been the temp for a little longer, which is also another worry of getting stuck somewhere which doesn't match in current conditions.

I've had a handful of interviews and while they weren't the best as I never do when in work which I keep forgetting (one employer has agreed to keep details on file) so trying to network ahead whilst keeping my head over the advantageous position I'm in.

I'm on a Fixed Term Contract which came with a known end date and upping of notice period halfway through but that could cover the crucial time of Christmas. So you might want to query what you are being signed up for.
