Credit Reference Agencies

I was about to start a petition on the gov website requesting Credit Reference Agencies be forced to allow us, the people they hold data on, to lock our accounts in order to disallow searches for new credit. Preventing these searches would go a long way to preventing identity theft. As a side effect it would also stop banks from pre-approving you for loans and credit cards and sending you crap in the post.

I WAS going to set one up but found that someone already has, only it doesn't seem to have spread very far and the deadline is this Saturday. Please go to http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/creditlock/ now and sign the petition.

i just signed. i am quite upset at the small number of signatures though and very little time to go too

I too was disappointed to see how few people had signed the petition. Please pass the link on to anybody you know and explain that if you could lock your credit files then you would be less likely to have people running up debt in your name even if they did get hold of your details.

I'm also disappointed that of 17 moneysavers looking at the link, only 1 was bothered enough to sign the petition. YES, I'm well aware that online petitions aren't usually worth the paper they're printed on but letting this slide is letting the banks off the hook when it comes to credit fraud. Write to your MP, ask the CRAs to lock your account, do something for the love of god. Oh the humanity!
