Randomly received a new tax coding notice with an X on?!

Hi everyone,

I've just come home to find a new tax code notice has arrived. It says I am now on the usual code, as I was before, but with an X on the end! I have Googled it but not much has come up, other than it being some sort of emergency tax code.

Next month I start a new position within my company, but it's the same pay and not even a promotion... in fact for the first few months it's on a secondment basis. So it seems unlikely that it would affect my tax code.

Does anyone have any experience of this please? Really worried it's going to mess up my tax payments until April or something :( It seems even stranger that it's just arrived in the middle of the tax year as well!

Thanks,

Laura

Doesn't it mean that your tax is going to be reviewed next year?

  • That's what the note says on the back, but it seems a bit mysterious to me... And I'll be worrying that when they do review it next year it will turn out I've been underpaying or something! Why would they suddenly say they will review it next year?!

There are only two things I can think of...

    1) Last month a share-save scheme I was paying into came to an end, and I decided to cash it in. But the monthly payments were made after tax and the money I got back was in the form of a cheque.

    2) My employer pays for a health scheme so my personal allowance is always a couple of quid less than the standard, but that's been the case for three years or so and I've never had a problem before.

    Hmm...

Probably due to the health scheme. HMRC are always messing about with tax codes because of benefit in kind.
I wouldn't worry about it, I got one too

Phone HMRC and ask them - details here. I had to call them recently, and once you get over the voice recognition software (which actually seems to work) and spoke to a person, they seemed pretty good, and reversed a K prefix tax code my new employer saddled me with.

More tax code info can be found here
  • Thanks both. I contacted them on that number Tim and they were really helpful. They confirmed that it had been triggered by a slight change in the health scheme cost, but that it shouldn't have put me on the X tax code! So they have now taken it off again. Good job I did ring them!

    Thanks again :)
  • I'm not an code which is 11427L X. Normal code for everyone is 11500L.

I called up 2 days ago to ask !!!!!! is going on and they said I had underpaid tax and this was their was of balancing the sheet. I think it's because when I moved job I had a whole bunch of annual leave left over and I got paid in excess of £1200 for it. I can't think of anything else that could have caused it.

I'm going to call back again and get them to explain in layman's terms whilst I have all my payslips and my P60 in front of me.
