Tesco slow cooker-advice about using

sorry if this isn't the right forum for this but I know people that post here have/use Tesco slow cookers so I thought I'd ask.

I bought the £9.98 one after seeing a post about it here and am using it for the first time today. It says to put it on 'high' for 7-8 hours but it's boiling away like billyo so I've turned it 'low' and it's now simmering, just like it would be in a low oven.

Do other people use the 'low' setting as a general rule if cooking for 7-8 hours? The 'high' setting just seems too much heat....

I'm making a Moroccan lamb stew/tagine by the way, in case it makes any difference...

oh and does everything have to be cooked for 7-8 hours or could I do something on high for 2-3 hours for example?

  • The only thing I cook on high is whole chickens or pork as that is what is recommended, you can cook on high if you want something cooked quicker but its better to slow cook as it tenderises the meat better and lets the flavours develop. HTH It's worth investing in a slo cooker recipe book if you didn't get one with the cooker :o

I would agree with Irisheyes here. It may also stick to the bottom if left on high that long. You have done the right thing turning it down to low.

Im always using my SC, and never leave it on high. Ive found that food sticks to the sides/bottom.

Its always on low if Im leaving it for long, but if I need to thicken the sauce, I turn it high to so it boils, but this is only done prior to serving the food!

Like today, I left a joint of brisket on low, from 9am, until 5pm. I took the meat out, sliced it, and whilst doing this, I turned it to high, let the juices bubble then thicken, then serve!

thanks, I've never used one before and, as I say, the instructions were a little unclear.
