Loan for wheelchair

Looking for some advice please. Basically I need to fund a powerchair so I can be a normal human again after a spinal cord injury. Because I retain some use of my legs I don't qualify for an NHS powerchair so must fund it myself.

The problem I have is that I am on ESA and PIP benefits and while I'm not rich I cope and have the means to pay back borrowed money but I can't find anyone other than payday loan companies who will accept benefits as income. Does such a company exist? I only need to borrow £1500 and wish I could wait and save up but I need the chair to get out of the house so saving for months isn't an option. Though there is finance offered through a 3rd party on the retailers website I don't want to risk a no that'll affect my credit rating if it's just not going to happen.

My credit rating is only good rather than great, I have 0 repayments outstanding, no other loan repayments or credit but no one is beating down my door to lend me the money unfortunately. I'm going round and round in circles in my head so I'm hoping you clever sensible people might be able to help please.

  • The finance seems by far the best option. One search have have minimal impact on your credit history.

Have you tried approaching whichever bank or building society your main current account is with? They can see how you handle your money on a daily basis so could be more willing to lend you the money. That said it's usually cheaper to borrow that kind of money using a credit card, either a money transfer card or a card with a 0% promotional rate for purchases.

Don’t think Motability do loans, only leases, for which the OP would have to be in receipt of the enhanced mobility component of PIP.
  • Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm just starting the process of motability but for a car - I couldn't hope to fund hand controls and adaptations on my own.

I've looked deeper into the company offering finance and it seems they will accept certain benefits so it's looking more hopeful.

    Might be worth consulting Aspire

"Aspire supports people with spinal Cord injuries in the UK. Through it's Human Needs Fund it is able to offer funding for specialist equipment not available from statutory services such as lightweight wheelchairs, powered chairs, electronic page turners and assistive technology equipment. Applications for medical equipment will require support from an appropriate health professional. To apply download the application form and guidelines from the Aspire website."

  • Have you looked to see whether there is a credit union in your area? They can provide loans for people on benefits.
  • Have you tried looking in the secondhand market?

A few years ago, my late mother bought a motorised scooter costing more than £1000, never even went out on it, and she passed away a few months after purchasing it. It was sold on for £250!

The secondhand value for these machines is virtually nil so some very good bargains are available.

Look on Gumtree, or contact one of the age-related charities to see if they can help. Also, if you have served in the armed forces, there will be plenty of help available from the various charities - Help for Heroes, SAFFA, etc.
