An interesting new road to hell has recently opened up.

Would be ironic that things go south because used car prices crash rather than used house prices...

Yes I used to look round the car park at work and think everyone had a better car than me. In reality it seems most of them are driving a better car not having one.

I'll be keeping mine hopefully for about another 5 years but I'm not replacing it with another semi-automatic. Plus I'd quite like it in a colour so people don't reverse into it!

It used to be that way when more people had company cars. The ex used to be a bit envious about her sister and BIL as they were a 2 car family with 2 big cars. Until I pointed out that neither of the cars were their's and just came with their jobs. This didn't mean they were a zero car family though - they owned a car they didn't talk about - the Porsche in the garage which was in pieces and used as a funkily shaped shelving unit.

What do you not like about semi-autos?

Good luck in finding that colour. People drive into anything. The only colour stipulation I had was "Not white. Not silver. Preferably not black.". It gets rather foggy at times round here, and silver cars just vanish.

    That's a good tip, thanks Z.

Well given that 2 people at work on the table I sit on lease their cars, I thought I would do some digging...

I can see why there's worry now..

And in other news, Martin's "Black Friday duds" cause amusement for those of a northern persuasion...

I didn't get silver for the same reason. I don't see them! I got dark grey and didn't get seen either.

I like the control you get from a geared car in winter. When I m deliberately crawling in second gear on ice I don't like the car deciding it's going into first.

Go for scarlet...you know it makes sense... ;)

Having said that, judging from the dings I have, my car must be amazingly magnetic when I'm not around. Or people in Asda can't drive shopping trolleys. Whichever...

Is there no way of locking it? What about sports mode? (counter intuitive I know...)

In a fully automatic car, that's what "2" is for. You get second gear, with occasionally a taste of second gear, and often with a side-helping of second gear...

  • Yep absolutely get you on the reliability thing - I used the word "banger" in a fairly loose sense really - compared to the sort of flashy vehicles that the PCP merchants drive about in, MrEH's cars qualify, but in actual fact in the sense we USED to use the term, they really don't. It's surprising what a decent small car you can get for 2k or thereabouts! (both of ours also fall into the £30 tax bracket which is handy). As for the buying new thing, it;s certainly not anything I'd do now - no question that I;d happily leave someone else to take that first depreciative hit. the reliability issue is also the reason I;m planning to keep mine for as long as I can - better the devil you know, and all that.

    I'd have a scarlet car like a shot! :D

Once the PCP churn (I always view that term as being synonymous with "Angel Dust" - I am a child of a certain era... :rotfl:) is over, there will be a lot of flashy vehicles hitting the second hand market at prices which will be racing for the bottom.

There's still a number of brands which only survive due to the "rent for two years then sell on" phenomenon. The new minis being one of them.

Well you know you've fixed the problems with your current car as opposed to letting the next buyer "enjoy" them.

Ironically, so long as it can be seen, I wasn't bothered by the colour. I never see the colour when I'm driving.
