Facing disciplinary over something I didnt say.

As per the title of the post, I was pulled into one of the office's at work this morning by my line manager to be advised that an investigation was being conducted over something I apparently said to a fellow colleague.
To give you a little more background, I work for a print procurement company am I am contracted to work on a client site. We recently delivered a campaign for said client over a 6 month period which the client was not happy with. Its accused that during a conversation with the client over the final part of this campaign the alleged sentence was used.
I know for a fact the allegation is untrue and the sentence which I am accused of saying was not said by me.
The client may have misheard something I did say and has based her allegations on that.
So my question is what are my options? Is this just a he said she said scenario, or a situation where to keep the client happy the company I work for sides with her?
As an extra bonus the company I work for do not have an HR department so at the moment there is no one I can escalate this to.

HR aren't there to help you, so that isn't really relevant.

What was the alleged sentence, as obviously that could be the differently between misconduct and gross misconduct.

Separately how long have you worked there?

I have worked for the company for three years.
The sentence I am accused of saying is something along the lines of. 'the reason the job ran late is because it was being fulfilled by women'
  • and what do you think you said?

The conversation was about 4 weeks ago so I cannot recall in its entirety, I know that is not something I would have said seeing as the entire team who were managing the project from the clients side comprises entirely of women.

That's a very odd response...would have expected it is not something I would have said. If I was you I'd really think long and hard about what you did say and whether it could have been misconstrued.

I know I did not say what I am being accused of. Whether I said something which was misheard I cannot say. The team is made up entirely of ladies and saying something so derogatory not only to a lady or client is not something I would do.

Can you think of anything you might have said that may have been misheard?

I have no idea. I have been wracking my brain all morning. Can a disciplinary be called over something that was not said or was misheard?
