Two months ago I raised a grievance with my CRM (my manager’s manager, as my manager was already snowed under looking after two teams and was also going on holiday soon after).
The grievance was in relation to the shifts that week.
The week before, my whole team were put onto 8-4 shifts. I came in on the Monday and they’d changed my Wednesday to a 10-4, without putting the other two hours lost back. My manager sent our Resources dept a few emails on the Monday and Tuesday morning, as normal employees are unable to contact them. He heard nothing back.
By Tuesday lunchtime, my rota still said Wed 10-4 but also 8-6. Teammates who’d had the same problem had had their rota fixed, mine wasn’t.
My manager called resources, who said they’d put it right. I came in on the Wed and it still said 10-4. There was no overtime and I was advised I wouldn’t be paid if I worked unscheduled hours, albeit promised by resources. I had come in for 8 but now had two hours to burn. So, as doing nothing is the worst thing I could think of and because it’d be pointless going home to turn straight back around, I helped my manager catch up with some much needed filing (he’s currently bogged under looking after our team and another one as their manager is not trained to take escalations yet) and did some of the cleaning our cleaners obviously don’t do.
Anyway, I raised this with my CRM and he got back to me after TWO MONTHS. He said I’d be able to have those two hours back off the phone, as they can’t pay me for something I’m not scheduled for. Bewildered and taken out of the blue, I accepted, a small two hours off the phone would allow me to send the oodles of emails, complete account checks and everything else that I normally complete in wrap (a term most call centre workers know, it’s between ending one and starting another call). I mean, most would use it to chill but, as we rarely have enough offline time and I want to give my customers the service I expect, I really don’t mind.
I asked for that time on Friday but was refused it. Does anyone think I would be worth mentioning to them that, as it wasn’t convenient for me to come in early that day, for them to play the convenience card with me is rich.
Also, does anyone think that it’d be worth getting my union involved? I know it probably is but, where we work, union members usually have to keep it hush hush around certain bosses (not mine, thankfully. I have the manager that does everything he can to do a good job, to the point where he’s marking calls and working complaints in the office when we’re closed on a Sunday! He’s one of the few senior staff worth their wage!)

You were told you would not be paid for the two hours. They've said you can have two hours off the phones, but they did not say you could choose those hours. They'll no doubt let you have them when it is quiet.
How long have you worked there? You're creating quite an issue over two hours. Choose your battles carefully.0 -

I understand that but to be told that I’ll get it at a time when I would ordinarily receive it does make it somewhat useless.
I’ve been there almost two years, a long time in my place (I’m the last of my intake’s three groups left).
I know that what they said was not specific but I asked for that time to do my work and help the team.0 -

A long time or not with under 2 years service your Company can dismiss without reason and you wouldn't be able to take them to a tribunal. Hence the reason IamWales advised to choose your battles carefully.0
