Linen Teatowels disappointment

Thanks for the La Redoute reminder jackyann I bought some lovely muslin voiles many years ago from them and in the past year or so have been trying to remember the name
So good to see wondercollie here . I've wondered how you were . Was it the Tougher threads you used to post on? I used to look forward to your reports from the frozen wastes .
Oddly enough dd2 will be flying to Canada in a couple of weeks . I may need to hide in the luggage so I can peek at your collection .

Which is more practical? I don't use tea towels for cleaning up food mess or anything. Mainly it's just for drying water spills around the sink when I'm doing the dishes, and for drying my hands on. Also as an oven glove.
Are linen ones really just for polishing glasses etc? I don't have any fancy glassware. I do like the thought that they can be boiled and will last forever.0 -
I think that in your shoes I would do one of two things:
Put them away and get them out on special occasions - especially if someone is helping with the washing up!
Or just use them! they will soften with time, and you will see how long they last! That would be my choice.
Glad to help pollyanna - it's always worth looking at La Redoute; like French supermarkets, you can get bargains because they discount different things to most UK sites.0 -
Who knew where a thread would lead . The mention of La Redoute led me to remember a thick and warm knee length fitted wool coat from about 10 or more years ago . I searched wardrobes and cupboards and found it . it's at least five years since I wore it but I'll be wearing it this winter . Also found two linen flippy skirts from the same source , it's like having new clothes .
The talk of real linen reminded me of my carefully collected french general books . Sewers and embroiderers may recognise the name . So I've searched bookcases and shelves to locate them and now look forward to sitting as the dark nights arrive cross stitching red , white and silver on good linen fabric from the stash . At least you can still track that down .
So from a tired and slightly dusty me thanks again to the original poster . I hope the perfect tea towel comes your way .

I've just read you post Ripply for mopping around the sink and drying your hands a white toweling tea towel would be good if you want something you can boil or a thick textured cotton one which could stand high temperatures . A proper oven glove would mean you may not need to boil the tea towels . I find using a tea towel to take things from the oven often leads to stubborn stains .

I lurk mostly. But tea towels will bring me out, well so will the offer of Jelly Babies and Fry's Chocolate Creams.:rotfl:0 -
I'm wondering if it was the first no T words thread started by Scottish Minnie . If Mar aka Mardatha picks up a mention of Jelly Babies she'll be on the next plane over . We do struggle to rein her in nowadays .

Thank you pollanna! And for those of you who don't know La Redoute - do have a look. I make a lot of my own clothes and am still using up work clothes, so rarely buy, but if I do, I always look at them.
Back to Old Style - my kitchen towels are cut down from bath towels that have worn holes. I hem pieces, add tape for hanging, and find them very good. Admittedly, now it's down to 2 of us at home, the towels don't wear through as much!0 -
I always did that with towels too , my mum used to do the same .
Now the offspring are grown and flown I haven't managed to wear out a towel .
I collected decent towels over the years in sales and from outlets and they're still going strong .
My nightmare was when the 3 daughters were sneaking in permanent hair dyes when each one hit their teens . I used to be faced with ruined grouting , sealant and towels . Don't miss that :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Dark coloured towels are a lifesaver, plus one manky light coloured/grey with muddy red/black/blue/brown stains for bleaching purposes.
Here's a flashback moment - did anybody here use proper nappies for their kids and end up using the nappies that didn't get passed on to other people's babies for the next twenty years? One of DD1's was being used to mop up after the animals and cleaning the appliance filters until about 5 years ago - it had been ripped right in the middle by getting caught in the washing machine drum circa. 1993, was repaired (badly - I couldn't sew very well at age 20) and I wasn't going to throw away a perfectly good, absorbent piece of towelling just because it couldn't go on an infant's behind.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0
