i have nearly 15000£ debt and i was paying nearly 400£/ month and everything was fine, but recently i lost my well paid job. i got offer back home and my parents have health issues.
So instead of looking for another job in UK, hoping for the best, and sinking deeper into debts, i decided to back to my country and take the job offer.
Problem is that new job isn't well paid, and i can't afford to pay off my debts anymore.
I read about DRO and i know that i can still apply for it, even though that i moved away from UK (as long as i lived in UK in last 3 years) But NOBODY want's to help.
Did Stepchange Debt Remedy, and everything was going towards DRO application, but as long as they learned that i moved away, they just send me an email that they can't give me any advice, and just Mute me, don't reply to my emails, don't give me any details how to apply for DRO, just completely ignores me, can't even get an reply from customer service.
Had DMP with Harrington Brooks, i did ask for advice from them, and response was shocking... When they learned that i moved out, they didn't gave any advice, what they did was send me an email, that they canceling my DMP and all Direct debits, and they let me know that i should deal with my creditors myself...
Don't know what to do... please help.
Why DRO application have to be so roundabout, confusing and difficult?
Hope for any advice.

Hi,
Are you intending coming back to the UK at all ?
The debt charities are wary of taking on overseas clients due to various factors that complicate the issue.
As for Harrington Brookes, all they care about is making money from you, they obviously decided you were not going to make them any, so dumped you.
I would maybe let sleeping dogs lie for now, once the creditors cant trace you, you will be put to the bottom of the pile, whilst they decide if its cost effective to chase you abroad or not, if they don't know where you are, they cant bother you.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Hi kairiozuki
The simple fact is that most debt charities won't have the resources to assist with debt solutions for people based overseas due to the costs involved in making contact etc., not to mention the complications caused by currency conversion. We at National Debtline would be unable to assist you for these very reasons.
It may help you to consider how, if at all, your UK debts can actually affect you now that you are resident in your home country again. UK debts will have no bearing on your ability to obtain credit in other territories. It is also relatively unlikely that creditors could or would pursue you outside of their own jurisdiction - cross-border legal action can often be too complicated and expensive for it to be worth their while.
If you are still determined to pursue a DRO, then you may be able to find a UK intermediary able to help in the commercial sector. A list of intermediaries and their contact details can be found at:

So your suggestion is to runaway? and hide? since my home country is within EU i think they can trace me very easily if they want. since i have to declare my home address when i started my new job.
I wanted to sort it out in legal way, but i might end up running away, and if debt collectors gonna knock to my doors i'll then have to deal with it.
I did contact nearly all DRO intermediaries on that list, nobody wants to help. i understand that it might be more difficult, but as i know, you can apply for DRO while you are away, but i guess UK goverment made it difficult and confusing to do so.
Anyway thank you for your replies
BTW i'm not planning to comeback to UK at all0 -

Then to be honest, i wouldn't worry about it.
If you ever were contacted about the debts by a debt collector, it would be your choice whether to engage with them or not.
Sometimes you try to do the right thing and discover you cant..........that's just life I`m afraid.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. I think it's very laudable that you WEREN'T thinking of running away, lots of people would. But as sourcrates says sometimes you can't even do the right thing and I certainly wouldn't blame you for just leaving it for now and seeing what happens. I hope it works out for you either way.Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Thank you all for your responses
i am just afraid that if they find me and can't get anything from me, they might start hunting for my family assets as well...
Did anyone ever faced Debt collectors? how does it work? what's the worst case scenario?0 -

Ha, loads of them lol.
Debt collectors are not bailiffs, they have no power at all.
Your debts are yours exclusively, no one else can be held liable for them.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
