I really need to talk to someone about my career. What qualities should I look for?

Hi all,

I am really looking to talk to someone about my career. There are many changes happening and I need some sound advice.

I have some friends but they are not really all that experienced. I need to talk to someone who has experience and can offer good advice. What qualities should I look for in finding that type of person who can give sound advice?

It sounds easy but what I mean is, what type of people tend to be best people to talk to when your career is approaching crossroads?

    Successful ones in your field?
  • I'd ask myself what my career plans are, then as above, speak to someone who is already doing it and see how they got there.

Someone who's retired. They have all the experience, they can be completely candid and they won't be worried about a potential rival for their job.

Even if they don't know you from Adam, they will probably be delighted to talk about your career having not had an opportunity to talk shop with anyone for years.
  • What line of work are you in? If it's wandering round the place with a scruffy looking dog puppet on your arm, I'd recommend Bob Carolgees. If it's something else, then probably somebody who knows something about it. As there aren't likely to be a vast pool of people in your social circle with relevant experience, try talking to all of them until one listens.

How people can get into careers now is different to even 10 or 20 years ago. So if you are talking to someone who got into the career a while ago keep this in mind. Ideally you would find someone who is involved in current recruitment.
