Should I ask for my days leave back?

Hi I went for an interview with my current employer for a vacancy that had been advertised externally and internally. There were 2 vacancies. A friend of mine was already temping on 1 and intended to go for an interview but as there were 2 vacancies I thought I would have a go.I took a days leave and paid petrol to attend an interview some 90 miles away. I'm pleased that my friend got one of the positions, the other filled by a member of staff from another branch. No problem thus far until a picture appears in the office newsletter of this lady being congratulated on her new job. I can't prove it (yet) but I think the picture was taken before I was even interviewed. If I can get proof, I want my days leave reimbursed maybe even my fuel. Is that just sour grapes on my part?

Sour grapes, though I can understand you being annoyed.
You made the choice to take the day off. If you were applying to an outside organisation you wouldn't be asking them to pay you for your time (unless they have an expenses policy).0 -

What makes you think that?0 -
Maybe they had already given 1 job to the lady in the photograph and the other was still up for grabs between your friend and you.0

Or maybe the photo was old stock for something else that was reused.
Whatever - no you aren't entitled to the day back or expenses (unless that was previously agreed). You go for an interview, there may be a thousand fair or unfair reasons why you don't get it - but that's the luck of the draw.0 -
As sangie suggests: Even if you think the photograph was taken before the interviews took place - why do you think that means she was guaranteed the job?
The only reason I think you could know for sure would be if she was wearing a name badge in the photo saying 'new head of X' and holding a newspaper showing the date... which isn't impossible I suppose.
People are often asked to provide an existing photograph for things like newsletters and some can clearly be several years old or from a professional glamour shoot - to the point at which the person is unrecognisable walking around the office (which may be the point:cool:)That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.
