I like that idea. There was a study done last year about the 20% of people who are incabable of budgeting or resisting the urge to spend if they had the credit available.

Maybe advertising and offering of loans should be tightened up. Maybe credit card minimum repayments should be increased so that they take a maximum of 2 years to repay rather than the 17-40 years at present.

Maybe loans should only be made to buy big ticket stuff like cars and houses, not just overspending.

Everyone is different though and in a free world if someone is prepared to lend to you and you appear to have the ability to pay it back then would the state be accused of being a 'nanny' if rules prevented you from doing it. But then we are prevented from smoking or drinking or doing other stuff that is harmfull, so maybe over-borrowing is just as bad for our health!

martin, will you consider doing a programme about people with a terrible spending habit who have remortgaged or switched to 0% finance to deal with their debts being bombarded by banks and loan companies etc to take out more credit - this has happened to me several times and it is unbeleivable how much will power it takes to rip them all up - surely this must be unethical in some way?

I've already done a couple of Tonights which incorporate that theme.

As for the question on store cards - yes - a store card is just a restricted form of credit card so follow the same guidelines :)

I would have loved to take part but have just started my process.

4 years ago I took out a 20k loan with Lloyds or LloydsTSb (whichever they were at the time,) which they then ADDED ANOTHER LUMP FOR THE INSURANCE which I was told I HAD TO have as it was for Debt consolidation. I was asked if I had any existing medical conditions and TOLD THEM I have coeliac disease and was told IT WASNT A PROBLEM. Recently tried to make a claim as was off work for 3 months due to anaemia (a side effect of the original condition) and was told CANT CLAIM - PRE EXISTING CONDITION.

Have just had a letter back saying sorry you're not happy but we will look into it (and apparently it can take up to 8 weeks)! I have paid £4700 in premiums - £93 per month and what for !!!!!
    Mortgage, paid off!
