Dodgy Capquest Letter?

Good evening all,
I am hoping someone can help me with some advice regarding Capquest and a letter I have received from them recently.
To fill in the background, about 10 years ago I had a credit card with Aqua. Only a £500 limit, but due to unfortunate circumstances at the time I ended up defaulting on the card.
At the time I was living with friends in a shared house, but moved out in February 2012, and have moved again since. I have been living in my current residence for 4 years next month, and this is the first I have heard from them.
The letter states that I owe £2537.78!!
They claim to have written to me in the past (they haven't), and that if I do not take action to settle the account it will be sent on to a 'specialist collection agency', whatever that might be.
I have read the other threads on here about Capquest, and am 99% certain that I have neither made a payment to nor acknowledged the debt since 2010 at the very latest, so am almost certain it is statute barred - for certain I have not acknowledged the debt since I left the shared house, which is 6 years ago in February.
I have sent them a 'prove-it' email, and have had an automated response stating I will be contacted by post in the next 10 days.
My question is, are they using scare tactics in an attempt to get me to pay? I really don't want a couple of blokes turning up on my doorstep asking for money - is this something that can happen?
I have signed up to creditreport.co.uk to check the situation, and the debt does not show on my file. Not does it show any CCJ's against me.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
GL82

The prove-it was the right thing to do. See what comes back.
Yes, scare tactics comprise the business model for Capquest. And no, no-one's going to turn up at your door.0 -
Unlikely, Capquest don't employ doorstep collectors.
Your account will now be on hold until they provide you with evidence.
It's likely to be statute barred, and that's probebly the approach I would use to deal with it.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Hi fatbelly & sourcrates,
Thankyou for the quick response - this has put my mind at ease!
I will update the thread with the outcome of my prove-it email.
Thanks,
