Remortgaging, best completion date?

My mortgage payments are made on the first of each month and this was my last one on my 2 year deal. A new ten year old deal should start with Barclays from the 1st of Oct. Their solicitors have been working on it and today was supposed to the completion day. In the past I expressed to them my worry they will complete to early but they assured me it will be fine. Then last week they said it's best to complete today so I don't end up paying my current bank again on the first of Oct. I said okay and paid them a £900 shortfall. But today I got a message saying they cancelled the completion due to my past concern of early repayment charges and will complete after these expired. Sometimes talking to them is like talking with someone who has a short term memory loss... they just acknowledge whatever I say and then just do whatever they do anyway. Should I just let them do what they are doing or should I call them and ask them to complete now? I thought it would be a seamless transition without any fuss but now they have confused me. How does it work? Can they complete now so the next payment is to the new bank without incurring early repayment charges from the old bank?
