Applying for different job?

I've worked at my current job for the last 18 months, around 5 weeks ago I moved up a pay band and started a new job within the company. I applied for the job through application and interview. However I am looking at applying for different jobs within a different sector. If I get offered an interview some require to take up references before interview. What could my employer potentially do, if they get asked for a reference and I do not end up leaving the company? Should I wait another month or so, when I've been in the job a bit longer. Confused as to what to do for best

Personally, I'd either say 'referee's details will be supplied after interview' or 'please do not take up interviews unless I am invited to interview'. Unless it's a field where this is the norm?

Potentially? Write you a reference so good the new employer wonders why they're trying to get shot of you? Write you a rubbish reference (which yes, they can do as long as it's factual)? Refuse to give a reference at all? Follow whatever their usual policy on references is?

Plus, take against you for jumping ship? Make your life a misery for doing so? Or speak to you like a rational human being and find out why you are looking around and whether they can make your job more interesting / challenging and if that would help?

So I'd start by finding out what their policy on references is: in a previous job we could only give the HR dept, not a personal referee, so your manager wouldn't necessarily find out you were job hunting. If it is your manager you have to give, I might speak to them and ask what opportunities might open up where you are.

If there's a particular reason you want to move on already, do say what it is ...
