Creating newspaper articles for no pay.

We are warned off from doing this, but has anyone had any success? (Further work, a job on the paper etc.) I know a local paper which used to have a offline kind of a blog on the letters page.
Online, the biggest unpaid gig is probably Huffington Post of course.

I know someone who got into magazine journalism by sending articles on spec. A couple of them were published and he ended up writing regularly for one magazine.0
