MSE News: Shopping at Tesco this month? Your bill may be rounded up for charity

What is sneaky about it is the message that comes up looks very like the message asking have you used any bags.
Interestingly following complaints at my local store the round up was removed but reappeared a few days later.0 -
I for 1 am fed up with having charity pushed up on me, I have to avoid town center main streets as they often have multiple charities there pressure selling. most the time I go to WH SMiths there is someone at the end of checkout line trying to get you to sign up. And to top it off at least once a week I get teams of people Knocking on my door after 8pm or on Sundays getting me to sign up for some cause.
I donate a lot of money and time to my chosen charities each year I also volunteer my work on people that cant really afford to hire me at my normal fees. If I believe in the possibility of a startup etc I happily do the work from Graphic/Website Design and then give them a link to make a donation to my supported charity in return, Sad thing is no matter what the person can afford if they are given a choice it will be the minimum amount. It breaks my heart sometimes that I do a weeks worth of work to see they pay £5 to my charity choice. Even had it done where they charged back the paypal payment how rude.
I am all for charity but I believe it is our choice to donate what we can when we can to whom we can. I am in no way selfish and I help out charities in ways more than money donations. In fact probably 30% of my work is at no monies to me. I am not Tight I promise.0 -
I just hope I never get asked at the till because I absolutely hate charities and consider them all nothing else but scammers! The thing is, I’m a live and let live guy that would happily ignore all charities but I’m sick of beggars at the checkout till imposing themselves on me wanting my money to pack my bags, now this.. even the checkout assistants are going to beg me for money.. . Shocking!0

Maybe Tesco will do a similar campaign next year, maybe not.
It wasn't compulsory.
And it's really not begging.
It's a simple question - 'do you want to round up your bill to the nearest 10p?'.
Do you find it difficult to simply say' No thanks' to anyone who offers a service (bag packing)?
To me, that's slightly different to someone rattling a charity tin under my nose.0 -

Part of the reason for the story in the first place was that it was, in fact, compulsory for some...we've also heard from some who claim donations have been added without consent – including a support worker for disabled adults and a single mum who says "every penny counts".
[...]
...a number of Tesco shoppers have contacted MoneySavingExpert.com and taken to social media to say they were never asked if they wanted to donate and had no idea about the charity scheme until they checked their receipt.Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries0 -

I should have said 'Tesco didn't intend it to be compulsory but because of technical glitches and poor staff training some people's bills were rounded up without their consent'.
I'd guess that the number of shoppers that happened to was smaller than those who were asked and those who weren't asked and didn't have their bills rounded up.
FTR, I didn't like the scheme.0 -

Hey, you’re entitled to your opinion, but mines is;- it’s begging when a person touts for my money, for nothing. And Yes, I do find it difficult to say “No thanks” to beggars wanting to pack my bags with a big charity tin at the place where I’m needing to pack my bags , which I do myself all year round anyway...I find it very irritating especially when the charities involve young children... How supermarkets allow charity workers to impose on their customers at the checkout tills I don’t know, but then I’m probably in the minority for complaining about it. That’s why I’m very much in favour of self service checkouts, and when there isn’t an option of self service, I either complain to the manager or avoid...again that’s my opinion0 -

Maybe work on your assertiveness.0 -
But your example was bag packing. So they are offering a service, not asking for money for nothing.
Maybe work on your assertiveness.
They're not employees of the supermarket. And, they are begging because they have a gigantic begging tin, in the way of where I need to pack my bags..Hey, you can dress it up all you want in your mind but they are only offering to pack bags because they are begging or as others would say raising funds... lol Perhaps the people involved should apply for a job then they could offer a service on behalf of the supermarket...0
