Dough!

Did ya see that? Play on the Simpsons. Homer's Doh! Sorry, couldn't resist :rotfl:

Back from holiday and ready to get back to breadmaking. I have no idea what sizes my bread pans are, and I've done a search on OS but came up with 3 different answers. Does anyone know of a definitive way to tell which size loaf a pan makes (eg: 1lb, 2lb)?

Also, If you want to cut lines (certain that's not the tech term, lol) in the top of a loaf, do you do it prior to a second rise or just before it goes into the oven?

Thanks to everyone for their 'bread help' so far . . . because of the OS board I'm no longer a breadmaking newbie. I feel I've moved up to semi-newbie now! :D

The small one is 1lb and the big one is 2lb. Problem solved.:p

Seriously a 1lb tin measures about 20cm by 12 cm and 6cm deep.

Hi, the reason you have three different sizes is that the metric equivalents of the 1lb and 2lb tins are slightly smaller.

So, there are really four sizes of tin (excluding the iddy biddy individual loaf tins).

I dont use bread tins - I put them on a baking sheet before their second rise & then straight into the oven (If you need the bread for sarnies then ignore this cos the loaf will be too 'spread out' to put fillings in, but for eating with soup etc its OK)

PS I just made 2 loaves of onion, caraway & rye - wonder if any will actually make it into the freezer....

Slash the loaves just before they go in the oven. The sharper the blade the better. Bakers use something called a "lame", but a razor blade will do the trick.

I've been wanting to make a round loaf and try a bloomer so I'll be going tinless next bread making session!
