I'm getting harassed by a debt company for a gym membership (Gymetc)

Hi guys I'm new here, I would appreciate some advice on how to solve this problem,
Around 4 months ago me and my partner signed up for a gym deal it was a 12 month direct debit but the first month was free. As we never went to the gym we cancelled the direct debit before the free month ended. I phoned up the gym and told them we had cancelled before the free month period ended and nothing more was said. A couple months later both me and my partner receive debt letters. I phoned them up and told them I had never stepped foot in the gym and never received a membership card or a induction day and the company ended the case. Today we received new letters from a different debt agency. If anyone has any advice or has had a similar problem with GymEtc I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks guys

  • what was the cancellation period in the contract? normally they give you something like 14 days. unfortunately if you were outside of this it doesn't matter if you never stepped foot in the gym. you signed up for a 12 month contract and therefore are liable for that.

    Hi,

Lots of posts like this crop up on here from time to time, people imagine just cancelling the DD also cancels the contract.........it dosent, all it does is put you in arrears, hence why your account has gone to a debt collector.

You should look at the terms and conditions of membership of the gym, the correct cancellation process will be listed, usually you have to cancel in writing, or fill out a form of some kind.

Where gyms are concerned, it's never as easy as just cancelling the DD.

You will need to contact the gym, best in writing, and come to some accommodation with them, look at your contract first, and see how much you should be liable for, you can always make them an offer.
