Access to HMRC files

I should probably know this but havent had need of this type of info before but.

Can I get a copy of all HMRC information on a client, ie their vat files in this case.

I have a client who is subject to an assessment which hinges on a phone conversation with a vat officer which seems to dissappeared from HMRC files, the client cant currently prove from phone records the conversation happened but it definately did.

DPA request, Freedom of Information Act maybe.

A one for the investigation specialists maybe, if there are any hanging about.

If you have access to the archives of Taxation magazine there have been good articles on this in the past. If you don't have this I can look and PM you...

I have a fair collection, can you recall what the articles were titled or the issues. I have to say I have a gap in my collection from when I moved and forgot to tell them.

if they hold a 64-8 third party authority for yourselves then you should be able to request it under the DPA

yep. HMRC manual for officers actually states to be careful what they write in files/on computer records as the taxpayer can request copy under DPA.

As said before a 64-8 gives agent authority.

The most comprehensive article remains Alan pink's piece published in the 31 January 2002 edition. Let me know if you can't find it.;)
