Suit shopping question

Hi all,

I have recently accepted a new job which I start in around 4 weeks. For this job I have to wear a suit and tie.

To be perfectly honest I am clueless when it comes to suit shopping. I want a decent quality suit without paying through the roof - less than £80.

I can probably only afford to buy one suit before I start work, potentially two. What colour suit is best to buy that would look okay with a number of different shirt/tie/shoe combinations?

Currently in my wardrobe I have 2 white shirts, a couple of other casual shirts which probably aren't suitable for use with a suit so may need a couple more shirts. I also have a pair each of black, grey and navy trousers, however the black and navy trousers are looking worn so again may need a new pair.

I have one pair of black shoes in good condition and a pair of brown shoes in worn condition.

My question is this - I have a budget of £150, what combinations of clothing do people suggest I buy in order to look as fresh as possible within that budget?

Thanks for all your help in advance

  • For your budget go for the next sale!

Black/Blue/Grey tend to be the business combo suits.
  • Depends on the job what standard of suit is required. Adequate ones can be obtained from supermarkets (if polyester will pass muster) or even Primark (if you're a young slim fit).

Primark are quite good for shirts.

If you have an M&S Outlet near you that can be good value.

If possible buy 2 pairs of suit trousers.
I personally think grey is best, black would show marks, fluff etc.
I second m&s outlet but could also buy online ? Sales also.
If you buy a polyester one its probably less comfortable to wear and would tend to look cheap. Look in sales for better quality.
    good luck!

Definitely get two pairs of suit trousers - it will make the suit last twice as long for a relatively small extra outlay.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Have the look in the charity shops near you, might find a suit that's cheap.
