Is this legal?

Does anyone know if it is legal to advertise a job as permanent but when it is offered to an internal candidate, it is offered as a fixed term secondment? It doesn't seem very fair but is it legal? Thanks to anyone who can help with any feedback.

Thanks very much, just wanted to check as it seems a bit underhand.

Seems sensible if the company have any doubts about the internal candidate.

You don't have to accept the terms on offer.

In practice it is makes little difference to an existing employee if the job is really temporary you retain your redundancy rights.

All that has happened by saying it is fixed term is you get more info it might end sooner than you want just like your current job could.

Consider it a probation, you can't get rid of a long term employee as easy as a new one so a secondment is a way to easily move them back to their previous role should it not work out.

There are certain sectors (mainly public) where a job has already been promised to an internal candidate. However, they have to go through a formal process including advertising, interviewing etc. It seems that you are actually just part of this 'window dressing'
