Wages by Invoice

My daughter is off to uni and will be staying in a private student accommodation block.
They have offered her regular employment helping out on site.
They say she needs to invoice them each month for her wages.
Does this sound right?
They will not be responsible for her tax, NI etc

If she can refuse work, and can do the hours at het own choice or by mutual agreement (which I doubt) then she probably isn't an employee but a worker, in which case it is possible that dealing with her own tax and NI would be ok. I very much doubt it, but I have to say that there is no evidence as such that they are operating outside the law in what you have said.
And far be it from me to say this, because I would never say it.... But students often do a bit of work on the side that everyone forgets to put over the top of the table. Not just students either. But I will confess that, in my (long ago) student days I might have accidentally been too stupid to realise that tax and/ or NI needed to be paid on money! Mind you, in those days, good luck finding the cash, tax man! Because, as far as she is concerned, I think the answer is obvious - if she wants it done any other way, she's doesn't have the work! I'm not 100% clear on what I'm suggesting is the best thing to do here either! But being young, stupid and gullible has advantages - sometimes you don't have to know things. If something wrong comes to light, she knows no better and she did exactly what she was told to do. On the other hand, I'd be kind of worried about what other corners they are cutting! After all, if she's on call out, what does that mean? Emergencies? Would she have a clue what to do? Or be trained in what to do? And if this is how they run things do you want her living there?
And I talking too myself about all that I come to the conclusion that if she wants to do this agree, see how things go, but after a couple of months go to the students union and tell them about it - they will be able to check it's above board and legal, and will support her if it isn't. She's in a union from the day she arrives - use it! A valuable lesson for her on the benefits of being in a union.0 -

I'm guess by invoicing they then wouldn't need to pay holiday / sickness etc?

Well they are treating her as self employed. Legally, whether she is or not is a different matter. Holidays and sickness - no, she probably won't get them. Insurance is different. If she had no reason to believe she is doing anything wrong ( and she hasn't any reason) then she is covered, if not by employers liability (which covers all workers, not just employees) or by public liability. Provided the cause of the accident is not deliberate or negligent on her part. So not any different than for anyone.
