I've been offered a job but there's a clincher. The role is a member of bar staff and we have been invited to a 6 hour induction day Saturday from 9am to 3pm.

This seems off to me. I have worked in bars before, including this one (I've been offered the role again after applying) and I have never been to an induction longer than 2 hours anywhere.

I thought we would be working during that time to make up the hours, but the bar isn't open until 6pm and their menu is very basic (no cocktails, just beers, wines, juices and mixers) so the training won't be that extensive.

Is this normal or just an example of bad planning from the management? I don't see how they're going to fill up 6 hours.

Ooo those pesky employers, investing in inducting new staff properly. Still, they're bound to be impressed with your know it all already attitude.
  • When a new supermarket was opening in town we had 2 days of inductions, first day was training on the company, health & safety, uniform, taking a basic hygiene test, the company confirming our final job positions, they knew already only needing to move around those that failed basic hygiene tests after a couple of attempts. Second day we were bus'd to the nearest store (50 miles away) to job shadow for the day and bond with our team, being a student I was contracted to 8 hr weeks (2 evenings + Saturday), these inductions were my first experience of doing a full one working day (6hrs + 9hrs) - all paid for including travel time.

    Nothing wrong with paid inductions.

If this is a large well known high street chain pub - the induction is very long. It was not a paid day - i think it was to weed out the unmotivated.

They go through everything from equipment use, H and S and till training. THey basically treat everyone like they are entry level kids with absolutely no life or skills knowledge whatsoever. They even go through what your pay slip will look like and explain that they have to deduct tax. How rotas work - in great detail as it seems people have are a bit hit and miss turning up for shifts, booking leave and the disciplinary process.

Then they do a tour, talk through the menu then based on how you handled the day allocate you a starting role.

Then they did a 'work trial' also not paid for a night - glass collecting and manning the glass washers on a fri night - then if you survived the night you get rota'ed on and paid from then on

(To be fair i was paid for my work trial night as it was killer busy and i had it handled - so the boss felt i should have been paid - so i was)
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

TBH that sounds really actually rather good. I'm sure a lot of people are sent for jobs by JC+ and are entirely unsuitable and this'll weed them out. Explaining payslips etc is brilliant - so many payslips are a confusing mix of numbers that don't seem to add up.
