Should I have had a P45?

Hi everyone,

I was working on a casual zero hours contract for 3 years while I was at university. I'm now in the process of getting a full time job and just realised that I still haven't had a P45 from that casual job, even though I left there in March. I'm now a little concerned that a future employer might ask for one and I'll have nothing to give them or that I'll be taxed incorrectly when I start work again. I have had a letter from my former employer confirming my resignation and official leaving date but nothing since.

Do you get a P45 from a zero hours contract job? And if I am meant to have one what should I do about it?

Thanks in advance!

I'm thinking it's maybe not relevant if it's not part of this tax year? Just say you haven't worked yet this tax year.

It just matter if you cant provide the p45, just correctly fill in the form given to you by the employer.

Yes you should of had 1 by now, have you asked them asking for it, maybe it was sent out and its been lost.

You should have had one but as it's now a new tax year it's very unlikely to have any impact on your tax code for this year, and as long as you fill in the new started checklist correctly when you do start work you'll be taxed at the correct rate.

To avoid problems later it would be a good idea to check with the zero hours company that they understand you have left and have no intention of ever working there again as until they do actually tell HMRC you have ceased working for them it could cause problems.

For example you could follow the sensible advice others have given but HMRC might then still put you onto the emergency tax code on a special basis so you don't receive the benefit of all of this year's tax allowances backdated to April if they believe you are still employed by the zero hours company.

You can also look on your personal tax account on gov.uk to see what information the zero hours company have sent HMRC.
