Can you apply the 14 day distance buying rules when purchasing an advance ticket on line?

I was planning to travel to London with my friend, her son and my grandson to visit the National History museum. My friend bought the tickets using her Family Rail card; I discovered today that I have to work on the day we planned to go. My friend is unable to move the date and I discovered that as we purchased it with the Family Rail card that unless I travel with my friend that I can't move the date even if I pay the difference for an normal Advance ticket and the £10 admin charge!

We only bought the tickets 4 days ago.

Thank you
B

Regulation 28 of The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 list those 'distance' transactions which exclude cancellation.

    In there you will see:
    (h) the supply of accommodation, transport of goods, vehicle rental services, catering or services related to leisure activities, if the contract provides for a specific date or period of performance.
Whilst moving people by train probably isn't classed as 'transport of goods', I would suggest that the service that your friend has bought falls under the catch-all of a 'service related to leisure activities'.

So to answer your question - no.

There is no link between the ticket and a particular family and friends card.

If you buy a card can you the change the dates?
  • GWR customer services said I can't move the date unless I travel with the person with the Railcard - my grandson is under 5 so I don't have one myself :-(

Just thought - this would still be cheaper than buying a new ticket! Sorry bit dense tonight - past my bedtime :-)

Read the second sentence of Daveyjp's post.

I think he was suggesting that you bought a railcard in your name.
That would work because there is nothing to link the tickets to a particular railcard.

Ah... I see you've sussed it now. ;)
