Upper lip waxing

Options
Almost every time I have my upper lip waxed, I get spots in the area within about 24 hours. I don't get spots on my upper lip at any other time. It means that for high days and holidays, getting the timing right is critical - not so close to the event that my skin is still pink, but not so far beforehand that the spots have broken out!!

Now the key thing here is that it's almost every time. Just occasionally, I don't get any spots. But I can't work out what the beautician might be doing differently. Could it be the type of wax, or the cream they put on, or their level of cleanliness? I always make sure my skin is scrupulously clean beforehand, and have even tried using Savlon to make sure there aren't any bugs lingering. I also make sure I don't touch the skin afterwards until it's recovered a bit. But all to no avail!!

I've tried asking what might be causing it, but they tend to be non-committal and I rarely see the same one twice. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what causes this.

I have the same with my eyebrows most of the time (salon wax) and upper lip some of the time (cold cream at home).

If I remember for my eyebrows I use a little micellar oil (few drops applied to cotton wool, and just wiped over) when I get home from wax, and before bed.

This cleanses & cleans the skin and seems to work. Not tried for lips as it doesn't happen that often to me.

I think it depends on how sensitive your skin is. It's basically the hair follicles reacting to minor skin injury/trauma when having the hairs pulled out! If it almost always happens, it might just be that on the odd occasion you get lucky and the skin doesn't have this inflammatory reaction.

It might be worth you putting some soothing cream or water spray on the area afterwards. Avene do a good range of soothing/calming skin products, may be worth a try?

Woods Supplements were/are selling a hair removing cream specifically for the face . I don't know how good it is, but it shouldn't hurt as much as waxing (I hate tweezering just the odd hair, as most hair pulls hurt).
  • I found when I switched to threading instead of waxing spots stopped - worth a try?

  • I've had my eyebrows waxed in the past - can they do it for upper lip? I've never seen it advertised for anything other than brows. But thanks anyway!!

  • I seem to remember from when I had waxing done that at certain times of the menstrual cycle you are more likely to get spotting, but I am past all that now so can't verify it.

  • I wax my upper lip myself with cold wax strips for sensitive skin, immediately after washing with l'occitaine almond soap, then use the wipe provided or some mild toner, apply serum and skin cream as usual. I used to get spots until I started using the sensitive wax but not now. My daughter always uses a face mask after having her upper lip waxed and swears this prevents her getting spots.
  • I agree with you. It has to be the sensitive skin issue. My friend also faces this problem. She applies mild lotion afterwards and it works for her.
