Pay period

Apologies if this is in the wrong place but I need solid advice ASAP before I initiate a formal grievance process.

I work part-time for 12 hours per week over Tues, Weds & Thurs - this does not change. I am supposedly paid per calendar month in arrears.

This month (August 2017) there are five full working weeks. My employer has already issued a pay advice for the period 1st August - 31st August but they are only paying me for the first four weeks.

If I am paid on the 31st, by which time I will have worked 5 weeks or 60 hours, surely I should be paid for the full 60 hours?

Thanks in advance for help.

Usually if you are paid monthly, you are paid 1/12 of the annual salary, which works out at bit more per day/hour for February than for months with 31 days in. Is this not happening?
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

I'm not paid a salary, I'm paid hourly - but the hours don't change. The point I'm querying is I'm not being paid for the period defined on my pay advice i.e. only 4 of the 5 weeks in the period 1st - 31st August.

You're paid for the hours you have worked, you've not worked next week yet so they won't pay you for them. Depending on what your sick policy is you could theoretically phone in sick next week when you've already been paid for the days.

Next pay slip you'll be paid for any outstanding hours you have worked in August and September.

This must happen all the time as many months cover five weeks and if you don't get paid on the last day of the month then there must always be some days each month you haven't worked yet.

I DO get paid on the last day of the month, hence my query.

You need to check previous payslips and do the calculation of whether you have been paid for 4 weeks or for 1 month. If you're paid monthly the payment will probably be the same each time. If it varies you need to speak to your boss / payroll to clarify the situation. It's far too early even to be thinking about raising a grievance.

If you are being paid for four weeks every month then you are only getting 48 weeks' pay, for example June has 5 Thursdays and May had five Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Overall you are being underpaid by just over four weeks. Perhaps your employer has worked out the annual figure for all the work done and divided by twelve. You need to query with them.

Whatever you get paid in August, is for what you worked in July.

That would be being paid a month in hand not a month in arrears. In arrears means you are paid at the end of the pay cycle for the work done in that pay cycle.

OP, do check previous wage slips - are you paid the same amount each month. In which case they have worked out how much you would earn over a year and then split it into 12 monthly payments. If this is not the case, don't jump straight to a grievance, ask work to explain it to you first as you are unclear on how it is calculated.
