How much gas do you use a year?

Options
We're going to get gas installed soon and are struggling to decide between a prepayment meter or a credit meter.

With SSE:
The pay and go rate is 3.693p per kWh

And their domestic tariff is:
5.445p for the first 2,000 kWh
and then 3.732p for anything over 2,000 kWh.

So I'd need to use 7000 kWh or more a year to make the credit meter worthwhile.

It's a three bedroom, detached house but between the two of us we only use a few of the rooms and we're both pretty frugal with the temperature and we spend all day at work. Do you think we'd be anywhere close to 7000 kWh around £300 a year?

You'd have to be seriously frugal to get away with £300 a year. That's 25 a month on average. Granted I have a gas cooker but go through nearly twice that. My house is well insulated. Are you changing to a combi or system boiler? I've a system boiler so still heat a pressurised tank, that probably adds a few quid to my bill.
  • We got gas installed in January. Combi boiler. 3 bed semi, in the middle of some renovations so not insulated as well as it should be. Heating is only on in the mornings and evenings and we have a Worcester Wave thermostat. We've used 7400kW in just under 8 months.

Im in a 3 bed end of terrace and have a prepay meter with Firmus. Over the last 3 years we have averaged £300 / 350 a year. everybody out at school or work through the week. Best move ever to get away from oil and we are never cold.
  • I've just checked and my gas bill for the last calendar year was, in total £153.58. That's just heating and hot water.

Got bottled gas for cooker which is about £35 each and is changed about every 9-10 months (I don't cook a lot!)

Four bedroomed detached quite new build with combi boiler. Last year 11270kWh at a cost of £338 but as prices are rising and maybe factoring in a cooler winter, the company now estimate the coming year will cost £416. I work from home so occasionally have the CH on during really cold days, otherwise I grin and bear it!

Just looking at my last year's usage. 15000 kWh. Looking at others usage. I think I need to turn the thermostat down a notch.

14500 last couple of years.....and that's 3 bedroom gas heating and cooking.......using the heating normally the thermostat is set at 21
We are in North East and can imagine if living in the South East it would be less consumption

    Gas bill was £375
  • Wow, that was a lot more than I was expecting :O

We spent £500 a year on oil and we thought gas would be a lot cheaper.
