That's a brand new inverter with all the cost associated - I don't know your install details so I don't know if that would be appropriate for your case as it supports upto 2650W.
Data sheet for Sunny Boy 1.5/2.5
A UK seller is selling for £589 ex VAT plus delivery

Data sheet for Sunny Boy 3300/3800
    page 68

As it's doing nothing apart from sitting on the floor in the garage, I'm not after mega bucks for it £50 squid plus carriage, or collect.
Only have six panels (2 strings (of 3 each I'm guessing)) and don't know what they are but always assumed a 1.5kW system in total.

That's a very generous offer, I may speak to the letting agent about it. Thank you.

theboylard, I am in BA6 postcode area may I ask if you are anywhere close to me?
  • Ah, not sure if it's appropriate then - massively over specced for your requirements!!

You're in Glasto country, I'm East Midlands. it's about 3hrs by car.
    From you - M5 north, M42 east, M6 south, A14 east.

Offer still stands, but you may get more suitable equipment elsewhere?
4kWp, SSE, SolarEdge P300 optimisers & SE3500 Inverter, in occasionally sunny Corby, Northants.
Now with added Sunsynk 5kw hybrid ecco inverter & 15kWh Fogstar batteries. Oh Octopus Energy too.

Yeah, I thought it was over specced. Wouldn't stop it working though I guess, and it's a very tempting price. :D

Ok, so here is the latest skinny.

The LA asked a solar man to come take a look at the inverter, and he confirmed that it has gone the way of the dodo.

The LA has now had a quote for replacement, but they have asked me about the price. The man has quoted £600+ to fit either an Solax 1.5kW or Solis 1.5kW. The LA is concerned because they have looked up the cost of these inverters (I don't know where), and found them to be around the £300 mark. If that is correct then the LA believes that another £300 for fitting (which seems to be a simple task) is asking a bit much. I think I agree.

The LA seems to like the SMA Sunnyboy 1.5kW unit I recommended, a lot more than the 'cheap' model offered by the solar man.

I couldn't comment on the two inverters because I haven't heard of them.

    What are peoples thoughts?

Also, they have an in-house electrician that they trust, and are thinking they would rather buy the inverter themselves and get him to fit. As another option.

Interesting and I agree that if the inverter is really so cheap that £300 to fit is a bit steep. Only took my sparks half a day to dismantle my SMA 3000 inverter set-up and remount, then add the 1500 next to it, remake all circuits and test. My kit is in a fully floored attic.

Therefore swapping out a dodo inverter should a couple of hours only...

I have just randomly googled the SMA 1500 Sunny Boy and it shows £550 ex VAT (or 575€ inc VAT in Germany - don't you just love rip-off Britain?)

Got my inverter replaced a couple of weeks ago and electrician charged £111 including VAT. Excellent job.

That's about what I thought as well. I think maybe the guy doesn't want the job, so just stuck in a high quote to cover the 'bother' of doing it.

I think I may advise they just buy whatever inverter they like and get their in house guy to fit it.
