Renting out our camper van

Hi we have a VW camper van and I have been considering the possibility of renting it out when we are not using it. I was wondering if anyone has any experience of doing this, know an easy way if doing it, and understand the details of any special insurance needed etc.
Thanks very much in advance.

You will definitely need enhanced insurance cover. Speak to current insurer or a specialist broker. Your breakdown cover will also need to be upgraded. Also see if you can find Collision Damage Waiver insurance which you can offer to your hirers as your insurance will no doubt have a hefty excess which your hirers will be expected to pay.
Obviously ensure the vehicle is regularly serviced and also checked between each hire and thoroughly cleaned. You will need to tell HMRC about your extra income. You may want to consider taking a returnable deposit from your hirers against breakages or damage to equipment supplied.
If possible try to find a company which hires out motorhomes/campers and see how they do it.
You will need clearly written terms and conditions which do not contravene the Consumer Rights Act 2015.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -

Have you thought about renting it out to people getting married too? Or offering to drive couples to and from their wedding in it?0

Don't. I tried it and after 1 hire the mess and smoke took us 2 days to clear, and this was a 1 day hire to a film company. Simply not worth the effort, and the insurance for any driver is eye watering!0
