Less employer national insurance as that kicks in around £112 a week if I remember roughly so at minimum wage it's around that

Thanks I don't think many of those apply to me

Income support - won't get this as I can capable of working more than 16hrs

JSA - yes could claim that but the point of me applying for jobs under 16 hours is so I don't have to, no point in claiming it whilst working as won't get any money as they take into account wages which will most likely be just more or equal to than JSA.

Child tax credit - needs to be over 16 hours work

Housing Benefit - doesn't apply to me as I have a mortgage.

Council tax reduction - Yes I should get this a small amount I suspect about the same as if I was on JSA.

I suspect with a lot of them that is because they need the hours they are advertising. eg 3 hours a day 5 days a week = 15 hours and have neither the need nor the budget for extra hours.
I work 0.6 which is 21.6 hours but that means the remaining part of my job is 0.4 which works out to 14.4 hours - that is still a desirable job as it is 2 days a week. 2-3 day a week jobs are popular with working mums in particular.

Back in 2000 months after having my eldest, I found part time work in a convenience store. The owner only offerred 15 hr contracts, unless you speciifcally requested 16 due to needing to claim WTC. The shifts didn't even fit to a 16 hr per week pattern. The place used to want to do things as cheaply as possible to them. The irony was not once did I work my 15 hours, there was always overtime but when it came to hols, I was only paid for 15 hours.

I also suspect because less people want them you are seeing more under 16 hr jobs advertised.

I work in retail and currently I am on 15 hours a week over 3 days. It suits me as I can't be bothered working full time hours at the moment.

They have many different contract hours across the store and it's for flexibility in the workforce. I have to be flexible in that I can work up to 36.5 in one week. The last 6 weeks I have worked 3 weeks of around 20 hours and the other 3 weeks of 15 hours.

I suppose if an employer employs several people on 16 hours or less there won't be so much employer NI to pay each period. Cost saving perhaps?
