Copy and paste CV contents into Linkedin?

Should I 'copy and paste' every single thing from the cv to a Linkedin profile? Or should they be different?

I was planning to copy things like profile, career achievements, career history, key skills qualifications, and interests.

Your linkedin profile needs to be much shorter than a typical CV.

Most people just run with a short couple of lines describing who they are.

I agree with this - the CV and LinkedIn have my full career history (ie places that I've worked) but for LinkedIn I keep to a minimum (key words usually) the description/contents of each role.

What makes you say that? My LinkedIn profile is longer than my CV as I want to keep the CV to 2 sides of A4 paper, whereas webpages don't have quite the same page/space constraints (as long as there's not too much scrolling involved...).

I suggest that whatever you do, the situation you want to avoid is where one document looks manifestly different from the other. So yes, copy and (selectively) paste, rather than edit, amend and summarise text. It should read like they're 2 different people!

However, while your most recent jobs, skills, experience etc should be verbatim, you could cut down the junior jobs early on in your career on the paper CV, with full details online. But if you do that, ensure you've got your LinkedIn URL on your CV!

    Most CVs are around 2-pages.

You can have 2 pages of text on your linkedin profile if you want, but nobody is going to read it.

The intended audience is different. With a CV, a hiring manager needs a detailed work history to assess you for a specific position. With a linkedin profile, people need to get a flavour of what you do in the first few seconds or they will simply click away.

Alternatively, you kill 2 birds with one stone by summarising yourself at the top of your profile in a couple of sentences. If someone likes what they read, they can find specifics of what you've done below.

If you need to tailor things to the extent your suggest, you're just doing a random series of jobs, rather than pursuing a professional career.

Use what works for you, you will always get conflicting opinion and even unemployed people or people who have never got a job through linkedIn telling you best practice on using LinkedIn.

My opinion is to look at other profiles (in YOUR industry), see how they do it, find one laid out in a way YOU like and apply it to yourself.
