Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I may give Dban a try as mentioned by superscaper.

FYI, the PC doesn't have a floppy drive as it was a hand built gaming system that I picked up second hand.

Surely if I could install Ubuntu then the HD is physically ok?

I will open her up tomorrow and find out what make the HD is and check the manufacturers website.

The error I got when the format failed was a BSOD telling me the HD may be damaged and to check all connections.

Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

this will wipe everything off your drive, i have used it and it works great, and it is free :)
  • Are you blind sheedatali? I mean ok your trying to help, but if you read upwards you'll see other people have already recommended it lol!

It could still be a problem with the hard drive as sco0ter suggests due to bad sectors which ubuntu can skip. Dban will remove the MBR so then when reinstalling windows it may not come across the bad sector...

Give Dban ago but hard drives are relatively cheap these days :) YOu could always use your current one as a slave drive for backup.

Does D ban come in ISO format ??? as i couldn't get it too work without a Floppy + it Formatted my USB Stick 12Gb of Data down the Drain

But thats neither here nor there as Seagates software did it's Job and finally i got a wiped HD :T what HD do you have Raptor as using Seagate software from an ISO was a piece of cake and i've Heard Western digital is the same ?

Equally if you used DBAN and got it to work i'd be interested in the results :)
  • yea my bad, actually I was just whizzing through threads during lunch time and did not saw the link, only if had read all the posts i would not have posted :)
