I have 6 direct reports 2 are also on 42.5 long termers like me ,the rest on 39 hours, one transferred from another dept and 3 I hired but on 39 hours as that is now the standard contact
I think you'd have to work out how to 'sell' this to the company, and I think it would be a hard thing to sell.

However, I'd check their maths and do some research: if you reduced your hours on your current salary to 39, and kept the same hourly rate, would you indeed lose £3.5K? And would that really be less than the benchmark for your role and level of experience, on that kind of hours? Do you have any budget responsibilities? Could you tweak the budget to get to 39 hours - either for you or everyone on the 42.5 contracts - with a smaller drop in salary, and would that be acceptable?

I've got to think about a similar situation myself: I currently work a .8 contract, based on a FTE of 35 hours pw. However for more recent staff the FTE is 37.5 hours. I am considering reducing my hours to .7, but if I do that it's likely I'd be required to pro rata to 37.5 hours. So I'd end up reducing by a small number of hours, but my hourly rate would also drop. I'd be surprised if I could negotiate for moving up to a higher band, but I might try ...

How does the pro-rata pay they are currently offering compare with the salary banding if you were hired today?
